Audi recently helped develop the Trimaran Yacht with the help of Stefanie Behringer – a german grad student.

In the words of designer Stefanie Behringer:

The new concept integrates two jet skis within a motorboat. the hull’s architecture is based on a trimaran (a boat with multiple hulls), consisting of a main center hull which is supported by two smaller outrigger hulls on either side of the boat.  Inside each of these two outrigger pods, one jet ski is stored.

The main advantage of multi-hulls,  is their slender shape which makes them efficient, resulting in less friction resistance in the water.  Furthermore multi-hulls are very stable at sail and at anchor.

the boat is driven by two efficient and lightweight AUDI TDI (turbo-charged injection) diesel engines, while the jet skis are electric driven. at low speed up to 8 knots, for example in bays or harbors, the whole boat can be moved with the single power of the electric driven jet skis, without producing any emissions or noise. at higher speeds of up to 30 knots, the two diesel engines can be switched on continuously. during this process the electric supports the diesel engines while accelerating, so that the boat is planes at a faster speed and less fuel is needed. at the same time the diesel engines recharge the batteries of the two jet boats.

The boat’s overall length is 15m, and due to its slender center hull measures only 6.40 m wide.  The jet driven concept allows one to even travel in shallow water, because its draft is only 58 cm.  On deck there is space for 12 people, while below, the boat offers more room in the form of four berths.  By flipping down a saloon table within one of the spaces, another two additional berths can be offered.

Beck started a Record Club last year.  In his words:

Record Club is an informal meeting of various musicians to record an album in a day. The album chosen to be reinterpreted is used as a framework. Nothing is rehearsed or arranged ahead of time. A track is put up here once a week. The songs are rough renditions, often first takes that document what happened over the course of a day as opposed to a polished rendering. There is no intention to ‘add to’ the original work or attempt to recreate the power of the original recording. Only to play music and document what happens.

The various musicians Beck speaks of includes Thurston Moore,  Wilco, Liars, St. Vincent, MGMT, Devandra Banhart, Jamie Lidell, Nigel Godrich, Feist, amongst others. So far they have covered the Yanni!!!, Velvet Underground, INXS, Leonard Cohen, and Skip Spence.  No downloads are available, just streams.   This endeavor brings up some super interesting questions within copyright law, where there is so much grey area, since the recording is of a live performance (between friends) and is only offered by a stream, where no money is being made through sales, advertising, or subscription. Notice the carefully crafted introduction of the project…legal posturing???  Beck does have obligations to the original song writer, but …. I digress, here are a few of my favs:

Nigel Godrich (producer on every Radiohead album since the My Iron Long EP and countless other dope albums) has created a production thats only purpose is to capture unadulterated live musical performances.

From The Basement…not to be confused with the christian version of The Basement.

Nigel talks about the conceiving the production in a 2007 Pitchfork interview:

Beck and I [had] been watching Rock and Roll Circus, that Rolling Stones movie that they made after they’d been on tour…we were just saying how amazing it was to see such a snapshot of that time: You get to see them, warts and all…hanging out with John Lennon and Eric Clapton and all these people.   [We were] just saying what a shame it was that there wasn’t anything that really felt as honest as that anymore, at the moment.

I think that I’m disappointed by the current state of the music business. I think one of the reasons for that is just because people don’t have anything stimulating to look at and listen to. So if we could somehow just feed something good, create something good, no matter on such a small scale, it doesn’t matter. That’s reason enough to do it.

As you might notice, there are no corporate sponsors, no host, no hidden agenda. Thom Yorke explains:

From The Basement was exciting because it came from the desire to cut out the crap that lies between the music and the viewer. To get plugged straight into the mains. No producer director egos messing it up.

Amazing takes of, for the most part, pretty amazing bands. With Nigel behind the boards, these cuts have impeccable character.

“Epically Later’d” documents skate culture.  The host and creator, my man Patrick O’dell, digs deep, stays honest, and illuminates characters from the community.  He sets the tone with his questions and insinuates with his edits to give us an insider prospective.  The title of the program didn’t make much sense to me at first, but after absorbing the depth, perfection, and imperfection of each character the phrase “Epically Later’d” becomes quite fitting.  It’s refreshing to catch these pros from behind the curtain, considering we only get to catch their larger than life personalities in carefully crafted video edits / magazine ads.  I’ve now watched every episode, and all I can say is “All Hail Cardiel!”.  Watch this documentary below and you’ll be a better person for it.

In terms of documentary film making, Patrick is the real deal.  He navigates through tremulous water on an even keel.    Watch all other episodes through the Vice player…sorry for the annoying commercials.
